What Are PFAS?

PFAS are often called “forever chemicals” due to their persistence in the environment. They have been widely used since the 1940s, and their resistance to degradation means they remain in water sources for decades. Research has linked long-term exposure to PFAS with hormonal disruptions, immune system effects, and increased risks of certain cancers.

Frequently Asked PFAS Questions:

What is PFAS?

PFAS (polyfluoroalkyl substances) are synthetic organofluorine chemical compounds that have multiple fluorine atoms attached to an alkyl chain. They are a group of man-made chemicals that don’t break down and can accumulate over time. There is evidence that exposure to PFAS can lead to adverse human health effects.

What are PFAS chemicals?

Most notably, PFAS chemicals include PFOA, PFOS, & GenX. According to OECD, there are at least 4730 different PFASs.

What are PFAS used for?

PFAS are used for creating stain and water repellent fabrics, nonstick products (e.g., Teflon), polishes, waxes, paints, cleaning products, and fire-fighting foams.

How to filter PFAS out of water?

In general, PFAS resist most conventional chemical treatment technologies employed by local water municipalities. The strongest proven technologies to filter PFAS out of water include granular activated carbon absorption, ion exchange resins, and reverse osmosis.

What does PFAS do to your body?

Exposure to PFAS may result in negative health effects to your body. Some identified by the EPA include:
Developmental effects to fetuses during pregnancy or to breastfed infants
Developmental effects to children
Testicular or kidney cancer
Liver damage
Immune effects (antibody production and immunity)
Thyroid effects
Cholesterol changes

How to test for PFAS?

To test for PFAS, contact your state for a list of laboratories that are certified to test for PFAS using EPA Method 537. To search online for EPA Certified Labs for drinking water testing, go to the EPA’s website.

PFAS Water Contamination & Removal in Kissimmee, St. Cloud, Deltona, Deland, & Debary

Many Water Supplies and Water Wells in Orlando, Kissimmee, & the Surrounding Have Been Impacted By PFAS, PFOS, PFOA, and other “Forever Chemicals”. Check out the Environmental Working Group’s PFAS Map to see how your area has been affected.

PFOA (Perfluorooctanoic acid or perfluorooctanoate) and PFOS (perfluorooctane sulfonate) are chemicals that have been used in the United States since the 1940s in the manufacturing of popular consumer goods including Teflon, pesticides, household cleaning products, and other items.

According to the US EPA:

[PFOA and PFOS] are “extremely persistent in the environment and resistant to typical environmental degradation processes. They are widely distributed across the higher trophic levels and are found in soil, air and groundwater at sites across the United States. The toxicity, mobility and bioaccumulation potential of PFOS and PFOA pose potential adverse effects for the environment and human health.

The EPA has released a Drinking Water Advisory for PFOS which reveals potentially serious issues linking PFOS and PFOA to conditions like cancer, neuroendocrine conditions, cardiovascular problems, reproductive issues, and more.

These chemicals have been around for almost 80 years, when they started being manufactured in the 1940’s. Unfortunately, a lot of chemical waste ends up being dumped in the water supply we drink from. Imagine 80 years of chemical waste contaminating the water we use every day.

The Water Quality Association (WQA.org) tells us exposure to PFAS can happen when we eat food grown in soil contaminated by PFAS or drink water that has been contaminated and not properly filtered out. It can also be released through the household products we use to clean our homes.

If you suspect you have PFOA or PFC in your drinking water it’s important that you get your water tested. We can help you navigate that process with the proper state agencies.

If you’ve already determined your water has been contaminated with PFOA, please fill out the form below so we can review your water test results and explain our customized, laboratory-verified solution for improving your home’s water.
